About

I am an early career researcher based in Wollongong, NSW. After completing my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in my hometown of Toronto in linguistic anthropology and East Asian studies, I switched gears (and continents) and took on myKatie Freund PhD in media and communication at the University of Wollongong, Australia on the vidding community of fan remix video editors.

I now work as an educational designer for UOW, where I develop innovative eLearning initiatives for academics and professional staff including using user-generated content and social media to engage students in higher education.

My current project is a wide-ranging digital literacies project to help students learn skills for university and the workplace. Read more about it here!

In my spare time (!) I teach digital communication, sociology, education technology, and media studies at both UOW and Southern Cross University in Lismore, NSW.

  1. Hi!

I am a sociologist (and criminologist) at the University of Windsor who tends to focus her research around popular culture in relation to crime and criminal justice, gender and sexuality, and social interaction and communication. I am currently conducting research on fan culture and online fandom communities and came across your website and find myself very interested in what you’re doing 🙂

In addition to my newly created website, I have a spot on LiveJournal at: http://community.livejournal.com/drdstudies

I see you’re a U of T grad 🙂 Looking forward to reading some of your work and to perhaps pick your brain on occasion with respect to fan studies.

    • Hi Danielle,

Great to hear from you! I’ll definitely check out your website. I’m happy to chat about my work, but be warned that once I start I have troubling shutting up. 🙂 I’m looking forward to hearing more about your work as well.
